PC origins

Good evening, fellow Kindred,

We're thrilled to announce that we extended choosable player origins to five (from the original three). Every origin will start with its own, distinct prologue where you play as your character before their Embrace, offering a deeper dive into their mortal lives as well as a new perspective where you see Kindred's political play as a mere mortal (and - in consequence - end up pulled brutally into it).

Origins will have an important role in the gameplay since they will offer basic tutorials for the main systems of our game and get you started. Their role is to be an extended start that will allow you to get acquainted with the game and, more importantly, give you some time to get involved in the plot. It is often said that the first hour of gameplay is the most important for the player to decide whether he'd like to play the entire game or leave it at that. We want to make the most of the origins sowing the seeds of curiosity and sprinkling them with some action.

Our inspiration for such a solution were prologues from Dragon Age: Origins. In modern cRPG games, it's not seen so often - the player gets his prologue, yes, but it is a narrow spectrum that doesn't take into consideration a pretty basic question - what about the Player Character's past? How did he end up in his role in the first place? As TTRPG veterans we all know that thinking about our character story is really important part of character creation. It allows you to create a character that is more than a sheet of paper with statistics - it allows you to create a person and form an attachment of sorts to keep playing. I don't say that dropping the player straight into the story is a bad thing in cRPGs - it gives a window for imagination for the player as to why the character ended where he stands - but often it comes out as bland and forced and raises more questions than answers. Dragon Age: Origins handled that well giving you not only a viable explanation of why PC landed where he was, but at the very same time it left just enough blanks for the player to fill.

Since Las Vegas is a quite diverse city with its themed casinos and bright neons we concluded that the original three origins we planned may be too few so we extended them to five. Of course, it will not cover every possible path a person may take in his life, but we don't aim for that - our goal is to show how your character ended up in that crappy apartment with a corpse and grew fangs. Nothing happens without a reason and this is no exception.

Here's a glimpse at the five origins you can choose from:

Once a respected journalist, you fell from grace after uncovering a scandal too big to contain. Your relentless pursuit of truth sets you on a collision course with the secrets of Las Vegas powerful Kindred want to remain hidden.

From FBI agent to outcast, your career crumbled after a high-stakes investigation went awry. A quest for justice leads you into the dark underworld of Kindred politics.

A former member of the Di Forli crime family, your loyalty was repaid with betrayal. Imprisoned and later released, you seek redemption or revenge, navigating the dangerous waters of Vegas with your criminal past.

You were the go-to problem solver, the one who made things disappear and ensured deals went smoothly. Now in mess of your own, your skills in manipulation and negotiation are even more crucial as you navigate the complex politics of Kindred society.

Your life in the shadows of Vegas’s nightlife brought you close to the city’s power brokers. That all fell away when a fellow escort goes missing and your survival instincts drive you to carve out a new life.

Join us on our Discord to share your excitement and thoughts on these new features. We can’t wait to see the unique characters you create and the stories you forge in the heart of Sin City.

Until our next update, stay vigilant and embrace the darkness.

Warm regards,

The Sunset Chronicles Development Team
