More on the setting
Good evening my fellow Kindred,
This is a great occasion for dev-log and dev-diary, so let me start.
"My dear diary, I haven't killed anyone because of the Beast for the last month. That's an achievement. Doesn't it?" Hoooold up... oops, this is not this diary
But seriously, in this entry I'd like to write about the setting - why we have chosen it and why the '80s and add some insight into our progress on our jam.
As we all know Vampire is quite flexible if it is about your story. It may take place in ancient times as well as in modern times or even in a more or less defined future. It may take place in another city - a real one or one created by your imagination. Even in an apartment next door. And it works! So the question is - why did we choose Las Vegas and the year 1986?
The answer is quite simple. Let’s start with the location.
Vegas is a great place to build up a Vampire story. If you look closely at the history of the city, or just around it you find a lot of places in which vampires may lurk or hunt for their prey. It's also colorful, bright, and never sleeping in a middle of a desert. What's not compelling about it? Did you know that tourists statistically spend around 80% of their time in the city outside their hotel rooms? Other than that Vegas isn't very well described in WoD lore. There are some bits of information you can find but nothing too detailed. Not like New York, Los Angeles, and a lot of other places detailed in official supplements. It's a great playground for world-building and stories made in places that exist in our world are far more compelling. At least it is my take on it. I hope you share my view on that. Do we embrace or use the bits of information that can be found? Let's say "no spoilers".
Having the Vegas topic closed why 1986? Why not a modern setting - or something in Wild West style? You placed your story in Vegas, after all, home to Helldorado Days. To be honest it would be a waste of potential to narrow the theme to just one. On the other hand, there are just too many of them in modern days. You have “New York, New York”, “The Venetian”, “Treasure Island”, and many other themed casinos. You can find everything in there, but nothing from there. In the 80s there were fewer attractions - fewer in the case of themes. Yes, you had “Stardust” or “Dunes” and other heavily themed casinos & hotels, but 1986 is a sweet spot. It also marks a new era in the history of the city with the start of “The Mirage” construction which prompted a building boom in the 90s - the luxury megaresorts era.
It's also the peak of great music and flashy designs! Las Vegas Style at its finest!
That being said we think that our setting will allow us to present to you not only a compelling story to dive into, but also allows us to embrace an interesting visual stylistic that isn’t too common in games within the “RPG” genre.
Any thoughts? Questions? Or a discussion? We're always happy to talk with you!
